Do Little Things Matter?

"One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much..." - Luke 16:10a

Have you ever made the mistake of believing a task isn’t worth investing time on because it’s “just a little thing?” I have.

For about a week and a half, I’ve been designing a poster. I’m new to the Media and Communications team here at YWAM, Tyler TX, and we thought this might be a fun little project to explore and learn with. Easy, right? Nope!

This poster became the bane of my existence. I kept having to edit and re-edit and edit again, until I wanted to give up and declare all posters to be works of the Devil. I told myself that I was wasting time and effort because it was "just a poster.” I wondered why this was important and I kept thinking that I would rather invest in something that matters.

In YWAM, we hear all kinds of amazing stories of the great works God has done through YWAMmers. We hear of miracles, and healings, and opportunities to teach and invest in young people. We hear about outreaches and unreached people hearing the good news of Jesus! In comparison, I felt my investment on this poster was insignificant. It became a little picture of a BIG heart issue where I can feel inadequate in the things I do to serve Jesus.

So, as I was stuck in a poster pity party this morning, I had the opportunity to pray for a work that God and two of our staff are about to do in Cypress. It’s a BIG work. They will be going to spread the love of God to Muslim people there. I began prayer feeling so tired, and just didn’t want to engage, but I pushed through that and prayed with all of my heart. As I prayed, I was waiting on God to speak to me about Cypress. Instead, He spoke to me about me.

If I’m designing and editing and investing time on a poster to please people, or gain the approval of those who will see it, then I’m doing it for the wrong reason, and the worth of the project becomes smaller in my eyes. Everything I do here, I’m doing for Jesus, which means I do the work with all of my heart, believing that my very small contribution can be multiplied to achieve great things for His Kingdom! I might have to edit right up until the deadline, and that can be frustrating, but isn’t Jesus worthy of that level of excellence?

What started as a little task in my eyes became a BIG life lesson in my heart. Jesus is worthy of my investment. I might invest in a huge dream or a big overseas outreach. I might get the opportunity to lead thousands of people to Jesus. Maybe I’ll get the opportunity to teach and invest in the next generation. Or maybe, I’ll get the opportunity to create a poster with a spirit of excellence and worship, and I’ll have the approval of my Heavenly Father.

Either way, I get to serve the Lord, and it is well with my soul.
