Hope for Maui Amid the Fire

Written by Tyler Tom | 1 Sep 2023

As news spread across America about the wildfires in Maui, we have been postured in prayer for our friends and family affected by this devastation. We've come together and lifted up prayers to God on behalf of the people affected by these wildfires. Missionary staff here at YWAM Tyler, Kaina and Brandee Lee are from Hawaii and give us a feet on the ground testimony of what's happening.

In a recent interview to see how we could come alongside the people of Maui, here is what they shared with us⏤

You guys are close to people in Maui. Could you explain to us what is actually happening and the impact on peoples’ lives?

People are temporarily being housed right now in hotels, but they know it’s not going to last for much longer.  The biggest impact is that they don’t know where they will live afterward because they aren’t going to be able to build on their properties for awhile.

What do you guys see as some the physical and spiritual needs right now?

Physical - Money. They have been overwhelmed with donations of clothes and all kind of other supplies.  They still have to make payments on their mortgages if they want to keep their properties. They still have bills to pay.  The majority of the people had local jobs but are unemployed right now.

Spiritual - They need the body of Christ to rise up and take ownership of the foundation that was laid by the Christians that came before them.  There is a huge spiritual battle over lordship for Lahaina (Hawaii in general). They need revelation of who the one true Savior really is.

What’s breaking your heart personally?

Division. Division between government officials and the people.  Loss of trust in God. The families who have lost loved ones.

How can we pray?

Pray together in unity, pray for unity. Be an example as a united body.

The Lee's shared with us after our campus prayer meeting. Listen to what they share in this video on our Facebook Page.

Please consider making a contribution today towards helping those affected by this tragedy. We are partnering with Mercy Works and a local church in Maui to send resources to them. YWAM Ships and other ministries are also engaged in bringing relief to those who need us. Your prayer and your giving makes a difference.
