HOW DO I FUNDRAISE?
Missions—it sounds wild, crazy and just what you’ve always wanted, but you scroll down to where it says “fees” and you stop. Maybe God has something else for you. You know, a cheaper option or a well-paying, safe option.
But do you want to miss out on the transformation God wants to bring in your life?
It’s true, answering the call of Jesus to “go into all the world” costs money! Sometimes a lot of it. But Jesus also promised He would be “with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). That means with your finances, too.
One thing you might be wondering is, "How am I going to pay for all of this?”
We are here to help! We have put together tips on how to help raise the support you need to come do a DTS.
Here's Olivia's pro tips:
Five ways to Fundraise
Tent-making/Getting a job: (Acts 18:1-3, 20:33-35, Philippians 4:14-16) Getting a job can allow God to provide a plan through old-fashioned work! Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty. We can all scrub toilets, mow lawns or even babysit to see blessings flow. And remember, if you are faithful with little, you will be entrusted with much (Luke 16:10).
Asking friends and family: You will be surprised with how many people want to give to you! You are worthy of support because you are honoring the Lord’s will. Have faith that God will bring you people who are willing to give towards what God is doing in your life. Set time aside to meet with people and share your story. Be clear, honest and personal, and always say thank you!
Ask your church: Asking your church can sometimes be scary, but if God is calling you, then He will provide⎼GOD’S WILL = GOD’S BILL! I would start with talking to a mentor, and if you feel God is leading you to ask your church, then step out in faith. Talk to your pastor or missions pastor, and allow the Holy Spirit to do His thing and speak through you! Building relationships in your church and keeping those conversations are so important in the Kingdom. Sooner or later maybe they will become a regular supporter!
Here's a story from a recent DTS student⎼
"I was so scared walking into my church with the question, 'Will you pray about supporting me?' ringing in my ears. All I knew was that God told me clearly to go talk to my head pastor, and ask him and the church to support my vision. The conversation started with me sharing what God did in my life and where He was taking me and ended with me in tears being handed a $5,000 check! It wasn’t about what I was doing or where I was going, it was about God proving that He is working behind the scenes. I was able to pay for my tuition, my outreach AND I had money left over to give away. When God says He will take care of you, believe it."
Start a fundraiser / Sell things: T-shirts, bake sales, selling art, pottery, or even a garage sale! The sky's the limit when it comes to fundraising. Think about something you enjoy doing or making and use that to bring in funds. I can assure you that people who buy items to support you will be more blessed by having the opportunity to support you, than by what you are selling them.
Pray and Trust God: Above all else, God is your provider. Start with asking Him for what you need and trust that He will follow His promises (Jeremiah 29:11). It may be hard, but it will pay off. Sometimes it may seem like you are working for months, asking every family member, Facebook friend, or church goer and running a killer fundraiser—but you still come up short. There may be things hindering you from your support coming in. Is there something God might want to show you? Are you not allowing Him to be in control of your plans? God should have your whole heart before you take any steps further. Come before Him with a clean and humble heart and He will honor that!
So, trust God. He’s got a miracle waiting for you.
We are walking this journey with you. We pray that these tips enlighten your understanding on fundraising and bring revelation to step out in faith. May God bless you!
